The Ever Betraying

Brightest light cannot blot out the shadow Even in awe, the decay lingers close Even the slightest sound echoes from a distance Off the many dimensioned walls within And you can pray to gods until you’re sick and weak Offering sacrifices, fast until you starve Nothing will ever shake the demons right beside you Nothing will break the hold their hooks have in your flesh And observed solitary, but you are never alone The faint chattering in your ear tells their presence And all the while you’re shamed because there’s something off If they only knew the roulette game they were all playing Forget not yourself lest someone else take control And if the monsters take you into their hold Hope against all hope that they leave you something You can never promise they won’t take it all again Another day moves on, with no sign of ending The grey sky hollow, the cold is persistent Smiling masks hide disgust and scorn All suspended in delusions of order
