Three Shades of Gray

A silent figure walks through dust The sun is pale behind the clouds No color breaks the frozen field Only shadows tell the past The second shade is made of thought A whisper caught beneath the skin It lingers where the wounds once bled And waits for time to speak again The third is cast from broken will A weight that memory cannot lift It moves between the dying trees And speaks in echoes left behind Three shades remain where none belong Each one heavier than the last The air stands still as they converge And silence settles like a stone
